The Future of Computer Displays

We have seen leaps and bounds in the technology sector over the last five years. The boom of digital currency such as Bitcoin, Hybrid vehicles and EV’s hitting the roads with vehicles such as Tesla. Automation has been the craze of late with all the vehicle manufacturers racing to finish with autonomous or self driving cars. BMW was part of the first manufacturers to introduce nano technology into their vehicles with HUD system ( heads-up display).

Even gaming and entertainment have taken a huge turn regarding innovative systems. We now have 360° cameras in conjunction with virtual reality headgear. One thing is clear is that boundaries are being pushed and nothing seems impossible anymore. Wireless technology has taken over and the microchip is now even smaller than ever, making for more and more lightweight devices. We see batteries that are able to hold more capacity and recharge in a fraction of the time it used to take.

What’s in Store?

So where do we see the future of computer displays heading? It’s quite interesting to see what is out there at the moment and what our tech innovators envision for the foreseeable future. What I’m talking about is augmented reality. It might sound foreign to some people, but most of the technology has been with us for some time. What is augmented reality you might ask? Well, it the process of taking a digital environment and overlaying it into the physical reality with the use of digital cameras. See some pics below which give you an idea of the concept. Things like Xbox kinect and the PlayStation i-toy. If augmented reality has been with us, then how does this impact our view on the future? This is by moving into the next phase of the technology. By allowing a controlled environment to become an interactive setting, where real people can interact with technology through gestures. Think about TV shows such as CSI where the actors call up images on see through displays or how Iron-man is able to pull up files as 3D images. Far fetched??? Not exactly…

Augmented Reality

Virtual RealityIt all hinges on the environment to make the technology a reality. A room filled with laser sensors that allow real life human beings to draw images in the air or use laser image building blocks to construct models. All this becomes possible in the way we use technology to master the art of light. It creates a whole new world where we will visit parks built in warehouses and it will seem as though we are in another country as an example. We can build prototypes and run simulations in record times allowing the need for expensive equipment, prototypes and time trials to be a thing of the past. By using the latest in AI( artificial intelligence), we can utilize space in a different way.

Artificial Intellegence and Education

The future is digital, which leads me to think that so is the need for education. Many jobs and everyday function are going to become redundant due to the affordability and availability of AI systems. Looking to the future we need to see and understand the necessity of becoming tech savvy plays a major role in our lives. As technology catches up with the ideas a massive wave of new gadgets will hit the market. This will open the market for new players to emerge in many sectors such as manufacturing, education and entertainment worldwide.

Augmented reality is one of the fastest growing trends in the technology sector. The way ordinary people as well as business view and use computer generated technology is fast changing. I don’t know what the future of the home PC or laptop will look like precisely, but it’s going to be different, fun and exciting.

Touch Screen Vs Normal Display

It’s been a number of years now since the introduction of touch display monitors into the mobile computing area. Sometimes it feels like it has always been there. There have been some really interesting developments in technology in the last 10 or so years and without thinking about it, we don’t realize the benefits or lack thereof when you buy the latest gadgets. For most of us it’s all about the latest features, not considering what we have lost along the way. I take for example the transition in music from vinyl, to tape and then CD.

There seems to be a trend of late where people seem to be craving outdated forms of media and the main reason is the quality of the sound it produced. The same goes for photography. There some photographers who only use film as their preferred method of capture, because there is a certain quality in the image captured on film that is very difficult to replicate with the digital camera. Most modern day photographers rely heavily on the software packages to produce this kind of result. I don’t foresee the same trend transpiring when it comes to computer displays, unless there are some antique collectors out there. So what are the differences between touch screen displays and normal displays? Have we gained, or have we lost along the way? There is no disputing the recent studies revealing the depletion of the retina in eye due to over exposure of blue light emitted by digital displays. Although that forms part of the cons of over exposure, it is not really the focus of this article. Please be aware of the risks associated with over exposure and try read some medical journals if you require some more information on the topic.

I remember the days we still used the old bulky CRT computer monitors, where you needed a full sized desk just to see what you were doing. Things have advanced amazingly since then with the introduction of LCD and LED displays. The amount of space we are able to save to get the job done is incredible. Flat screens have definitely made our lives simpler.

The technology behind the touch screen displays is really amazing these days. For one, I can testify to the fact where earlier screens seemed more like push screens than touch screens. You really had to apply a reasonable amount of pressure to get a response. Now it’s as simple as a light touch, and even hand gestures are now incorporated into the device which takes things to a whole new level. Sensors make auto adjustable light and auto screen color changing possible, allowing us to protect our eyes to a certain degree. The use of the “nightlight” feature; which changes the screen color to a yellowish or orange tinge as the external light changes is a great blue light blocking tool.

When it comes to reading an article or browsing through pictures on Facebook or Instagram. The modern touch screen displays are the better choice. If your screen is older than 3 years, then consider it outdated as it probably doesn’t incorporate the technology mentioned above. The changes today are practical, more than just “nice to have”. Having said that, if you spend your time predominately having to type written content, then the use of the touch factor becomes lost or redundant. Computer MonitorsThe advantages though is you could always go the route of the preferred device and make use of an external wireless keyboard and mouse. This ensures that you get the best of both. Certainly a welcomed introduction is the pinch zoom function. With just two fingers you can increase the size of the information displayed or decreasing required. I’m not sure of other manufacturers buts Samsung have an amazing eye movement tracking function on some of their devices. As you read an article, the sensor scrolls the page based on the movement of you eye. Absolutely incredible stuff! It even automatically pauses a video clip when your focus is taken off the display. The use of an HD display is an essential tool these days when you consider that most of the online content is now in high definition.

The above just offers some insight into my personal computing experience which will allow you to make some informed decisions on what’s best for you. So what’s the future of information display going to hold. I will share some insight in the next post and I think you will be in for a treat!

How to choose the perfect mobile computer?

Mobile computing has become one of the modern life necessities. The choosing of the best laptops and tablets can be quite a daunting task with so many options available as well as the variety of weekly promotions to consider. When considering any technology purchase there are few guidelines to follow; depending on the use and functionality required of course.

Technology purchases need to be carefully considered because the last thing you want is spending hard earned money on something that doesn’t function as expected and that you are stuck with it for the next year or two. Laptops and tablets are very handy devices specifically designed for life on the move. Though there are some cheap options out there, you need to give some thought how robust or sturdy you need the device to be. Below is a list of the top 5 things to consider when buying a Windows 10 tablet PC, laptop, Android tablet or whatever you want to call it.

1. Functionality

This deals with what you need to use the device for. Think about your lifestyle and determine firstly what type of user you are. Is this device for personal use or for business? If it’s for business use, chances are you are going to use the device frequently where as personal use will be more casual usage from time to time. Another thing to bear in mind is how often you move about and have to cart the device from location to location. This vary vastly depending on your type of work if it’s for business use. Private use might just be used around the house from the study, to the kitchen counter or the bedroom to binge watch the occasional Netflix series. Take a look at the spec sheet to see if the device has the necessary functionality you require, such as:

– The number of HDMI and USB ports.

– Is a LAN port required or is it for WiFi use only or Mobile network connectivity?

– Do you need a CD ROM?

– Processing speed and disk space.

– What size screen will suite your needs and do you require an HD display.

– Do you require a touch screen device?

– Is a detachable keyboard required?

– Battery life. How many hours available and charging cycle.

The spec sheet should contain all the functionality requirements available.

2. Quality

The quality of the device is highly dependent on the functionality and translates into a higher price as well for your more premium brands such as Apple MacBook, Microsoft Surface or other manufacturers such as Dell and HP. For the brand loyal types, you could factor the brand in as part of this list as well. When considering quality, the physical inspection of the device might play a vital role. You can easily identify quality devices by the aesthetics of the device finishes or by checking the spec sheet for a description. You might also want to look at rugged devices if you are using the device for outdoor purposes. Obviously the higher quality devices come at a higher premium but shopping around might get you a good deal.

3. Price

How deep is your pocket? It all depends on your needs and how much you are willing to part with. Personally I prefer to be somewhere in the mid range between low and high. This normally gives you good value for money and there are normally some good deals to be scooped up. Lower priced devices are normally bare bones and offer very little functionality and quality, where as the higher end devices are more nice to have items than good value. Most of the good functions are included in the midrange devices and the price difference could be attributed to the software included or excluded in the price. Devices used for business purposes essentially pay for themselves, so you don’t want to go cheap. The cheap stuff normally equate to tacky equipment that frustrate you and end up being an unwanted purchase.

4. Software

There are many software packages available, but some of the basics required are office related products. This is to create spread sheets, presentation or word documents. Most midrange devices include this as standard or offer a 1 year free subscription. More advanced users will require more specific software packages that are hardware dependant. Check spec sheet to determine this. The better the hardware is, the smoother the software will run. Advanced software packages may not be included in the purchase.

5. Operating system

The operating system is largely dependent on preference, but you also need to consider the software you want to run on it. There are certain programs that function better on IOS than on Windows and vice versa. The other option available is Android and has become a big player in the mobile computing arena with many brands available. The same applies to Windows. When it comes to IOS operating systems, unfortunately you only have one brand choice… Mac. Home or business use also needs to be factored in. If your company uses Windows as its preferred operating system, its advisable to purchase a Windows device for easy of use, backups and security purposes. The other thing is what you are more familiar with and whether you are willing to learn something new. This can be very frustrating for older people as there could be a steep learning curve involved in migrating to a different OS. I would advise that you determine your needs to decide on what best works for you.

There is unfortunately NO “perfect laptop”, but there is something out there that is perfect for you. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but as you employ the advice above, it will go along way in ensuring that you have a computing experience that you will enjoy for years to come.
